Weekly Reign Wrap-up: Out of the Basement, Moving Up

After one setback and one step forward last weekend, the (5-7-0-1) Ontario Reign are climbing in the right direction, moving to a .423 “winning” percentage compared to the Pacific Division basement dwellers Bakersfield Condors at .393. We aren’t in the last place anymore! The Reign stand eight points behind the division-leading Tucson Roadrunners, and next go for another step forward against the Stockton Heat at 7 p.m., Wednesday, November 22 at the Citizens Business Bank Arena.

In last Saturday’s 1-0 loss to the San Jose Barracuda, Ontario goaltender Jack Campbell made 30 saves and it wasn’t enough. The other goalie, Antoine Bibeau, made one more save (31) in his shutout stand. The lone goal came from Jeremy Roy’s first goal at 2:16 of the second. Not a good paragraph when there are more opponent’s names highlighted than Reign names.

The next day would prove better for the Reign, which defeated the same opponent 4-1. Reign forward Matt Luff tallied two goals and goalie Cal Petersen made 39 saves in the victory. Though outplayed in the second period (five shots to the Barracuda’s 16), the Ontario team notched it up in the third period, scoring three consecutive goals.

Said Coach Mike Stothers, “Lot of positives, glad we got the second game in a tough rink against a tough opponent. Now we bus home and get ready for Wednesday.”
