Drought is Over for the Ontario Reign in First Win of the Young Season

The drought is over. Let it rain.

It took seven games for the Ontario Reign to get its first win of the season. The team sees itself at the very bottom of the entire league at 1-6, with a “winning” percentage of .143, just a tick below the .150 Springfield Thunderbirds. Well, at least they have one team in its reach.

I guess you can say it’s a good thing there is a long season ahead since there is time to change the tide. And perhaps that happened Saturday, as the Reign beat the Cleveland Monsters 2-1 in the second of two games in as many nights. The day before the Reign lost to the Monsters in a 7-4 shootout.

Ontario next plays the division-rival San Jose Barracuda (3-4 on the season) at 7 p.m., Wednesday, November 1 at the Citizens Business Bank Arena.

In the Friday loss, the Reign went down by one at 1:23 and down by three goals by the end of the first period, and then never truly recovered. Goalies Jack Campbell and Cal Petersen combined to face 29 shots, stopping 23. An empty-netter with nine seconds remaining came via Tyler Motte who completed a hat trick on that goal.

The Reign had 27 shots and tallied 2 out of 5 power play goals (from defenseman Kevin Gravel and forward Michael Mersch) including the first of the season.

Coming from behind was just too much. The all-elusive first win of the season would have to wait a day.

In the Saturday 2-1 victory, it was the Reign that sprung ahead in the first period, with power-play goals from Sean Walker and Mersch. Netminder Campbell turned away 15 shots in the third period (for a total of 34) to gain the victory for Ontario.

We’ll take the W, and know there will be much more to come in a season that has just begun.

Do you have any idea why the potential tying goal by the Monsters was waved off? There was no announcement in the arena, and no mention of it on the Monsters site, in their recap of the game.
