Reign Weekly Wrap: 0-3-0-0 Start for Ontario Team
- Updated: October 17, 2017
Well, that’s no way to start a season.
As it says in the statistics at the end of last weekend: REIGN: 0-3-0-0 (0-3-0-0 Road)
A 3-0 loss to the Iowa Wild at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines on October 13 and a 5-2 loss to the Chicago Wolves at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois the next day has led the Ontario Reign directly to the bottom of the standings in the Pacific Division.
The team’s next game is 7 p.m., Friday, October 20 against the Bakersfield Condors at Citizens Business Bank in the season’s home opener.
In the Friday loss, Cal Petersen made his professional debut in net for the Reign, stopping 25 out of 28 shots … three too many for this scoreless squad. Though shutout, the team was more aggressive this game, out-shooting its opponent 28-27. The winning goal came at 9:58 of the second off a Pat Cannone goal. The team was 0 for 6 on the power play.
In the Saturday loss, the team picked up the pace. Though the offensive spurt was exciting, it was too little too late. Two goals in the first two minutes of the third period – Philippe Maillet at 1:03 and captain Brett Sutter at 1:32 – cut the Wolves’ lead in half at 4-2. However, the third power-play goal of the game by Teemu Pulkkinen at 15:31 killed any hope for a comeback. Reign goalie Jack Campbell stopped 33 of 38 shots in his second loss of the season.
Of recent news, Jonny Brodzinski will be returning to the Reign and forward Justin Auger will be sent to the NHL affiliate Los Angeles Kings. This is Auger’s first venture into the NHL ranks. We’ll see what effect that change will have for both teams.
Said Reign coach Mike Strothers, “There still is a lot of work to be done with this young group. We’ve got a good week ahead of us. Going to be ready for our home opener.”
