Galaxy Lose Fifth Straight
- Updated: July 23, 2017
The Los Angeles Galaxy have lost five straight MLS matches after a 4-3 defeat in Foxboro, Mass. to the New England Revolution.
Despite two Daniel Steres headers to tie the game up twice, New England ran away with the match in the 70th minute as Teal Bunbury scored two goals in as many minutes. Ariel Lassiter scored a consolation goal for the Galaxy in the 79th minute, but LA could not manage to find another.
The game was full of responses from the Galaxy. As New England would take the lead, LA had to respond. Twice it came from Daniel Steres headers on extended plays from corner kicks. But when the Revolution took it to 3-2, LA failed to come back.
The Galaxy lined up with Ashley Cole back in the defense after playing in the midfield in LA’s 1-0 loss to the Vancouver Whitecaps on July 19. Former Revolution midfielder Jermaine Jones returned to the starting lineup, playing alongside Rafael Garcia, while Jack McBean led the team up top.
New England had the better chances earlier on while LA slowly got accustomed to the turf at Gillette Stadium.
In the 11th minute, Kei Kamara nearly scored from more than 35 yards out as the striker attempted to chip
Galaxy goalkeeper Brian Rowe, who was off his line. Fortunately for Rowe, Kamara’s shot landed on top of the goal and not in it.
In the 16th minute, New England went on the attack, and the ball fell to leading scorer Lee Nguyen, who took a deflected shot through the legs of Daniel Steres to put the hosts up 1-0.
It didn’t stay 1-0 for long. In the 22nd minute Daniel Steres scored his second goal of the season on a Romain Alessandrini cross from the right side that found the center back’s head.
New England regained the lead in the 34th minute through Kamara, who was slipped behind the Galaxy back line to bag his fifth goal of the season, making it 2-1 Revolution.
At the half, LA trailed New England 2-1.
Following the break, the Galaxy came out flying. Earning a corner, LA had the first solid chance of the second half, which was headed over the bar by Jelle van Damme.
And just like the first half, the Galaxy equalized through a Steres header. This time, a Dave Romney header was saved and the bouncing rebound was headed into the back of the net by Steres for his second, and the Galaxy’s second, of the night.
The Revolution re-took the lead in the 70th minute on a counter attack as a Kelyn Rowe cross found the head of Teal Bunbury to make it 3-2.
Two minutes later, Bunbury made it 4-2 after a low cross to the penalty spot.
Ari Lassiter got one back for the Galaxy after Alessandrini rushed down the right side and found the substitute from a cross to make it 4-3.
The Galaxy return home to play the reigning MLS Cup champions Seattle Sounders at the StubHub Center on Saturday.
