McCoy had been the coach of the Chargers for four years. In 2013 and 2014 the club experienced winning seasons, but injuries and inconsistencies held the franchise back the last two years.
McCoy, 44, spent eight seasons with the Carolina Panthers staff working his way up the ladder. He then went on to be the offensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos for three seasons before taking off the Chargers.
McCoy helped lead the Chargers potent offense which featured Pro-Bowl quarterback Phillip Rivers. Speculation grew this season as the Chargers limped into a 5-11 record.
