Galaxy Announce Curt Onalfo As New Head Coach
- Updated: December 13, 2016
Sometimes the answer to a difficult question is simpler than you think. After the departure of Coach Bruce Arena just under two weeks ago Galaxy supporters everywhere clamored for a big name to replace the winningest coach in American Soccer history.
However Los Angeles chose to look within their own organization to find the solution to their coaching vacancy.
Coach of the club’s USL side Los Angeles Galaxy II Curt Onalfo was tabbed as the early favorite for the job. Having experience with younger players in the Galaxy system gave him the opportunity to provide the club with what ownership said they were looking for. The chance to make this roster competitive while getting younger.
At a press conference held this afternoon the Galaxy made their decision and announced Onalfo as the club’s next Head Coach.
Onalfo does have MLS coaching experience, albeit not the most successful the team could wish for. In 4 seasons between DC United and the Kansas City Wizards he went 30-41-25. However it goes without saying Onalfo has never had the talent he will have on this Galaxy roster and he also has never had the backing he will receive from ownership in Los Angeles.
A former Galaxy player himself, Onalfo brings a very different insight to the club than the former Manager Arena. Having learned as a coach under Arena for many years, Onalfo says he has “my own way” to manage this club but has learned much from Arena he plans to carry with him. The new coach also stated he has “an aggressive personality” and plans to carry that through to the team hoping they will drive forward and score plenty of goals.
Only time will tell if the club made the right move hiring Onalfo to kick off the “youth movement” but as of right now this was the easy hire for the club and in my opinion the right one.
Thanks for reading along Galaxy faithful. Here’s to Onalfo having a successful career as Galaxy coach.
