What Makes A “Point God”?

Point God

Magic Johnson, Isaiah Thomas and John Stockton. When putting together a list of some of the best ever at the Point Guard position, these three will definitely be up there. However Chris Paul can claim to be something those greats never were, a “Point God”. So what makes Paul so special?

It could be stats. Averaging 18.8 points and 9.9 assists per game for his career the “Point God” as he’s affectionately known by Clipper fans has a stat line that defies logic. Paul is a walking, talking double-double on the court that shoots 85% from the charity stripe and knocks down triples with as much consistency as he breaks opponents ankles.

If not stats, the clutch gene has to be it. Clipper fans, the team is down 1 point with 5 seconds left in the game. The season is on the line. Whose taking the shot?

Paul is the one guy on the Clippers roster fans put their trust in with the clock winding down. It’s all because of plays like the one against San Antonio in game 7 a few seasons ago. The dude just gets the job done, no matter the stakes. What pressure? Paul seemingly doesn’t recognize it and makes those types situations look routine.

If you’re not sold yet that he’s the “Point God” I’ll close my arguments with leadership. There isn’t a better leader in the NBA, period. Paul can come off as edgy, chippy and just down right mean while he screams at opponents, referees and even his own teammates on the floor. Did I say even? I meant to say especially, especially his own teammates. Just ask DeAndre Jordan. But if there is one trait wanted in a leader, it’s a guy that wants to win even more than wants to breathe. That’s Chris Paul in a nutshell. Few players in the history of the game have brought the same high level of intensity Paul brings on a night in, night out basis. Head Coach Doc Rivers has stated on multiple occasions when asked of Paul’s antics whether they upset his teammates, to which he always replies that there is no one else they would rather have leading them into battle on the court.

Just one thing is missing from the “Point God’s” glowing resumé, a championship. Will the 2016-17 season finally be the year Paul gets his fingerprints on that ever elusive Larry O’Brien trophy? Time will tell, but one thing is for certain. If number three is out there harassing opponents in a Clipper uniform, enjoy history. He’s one of the best to ever lace them up at that position.
