Cashner has been the subject of trade talks over the last few weeks and reports surfaced yesterday that the Baltimore Orioles were making a strong run at him. For the Marlins who are in the middle of the NL Wild Card race they were looking for a way to improve their starting pitching.
On the other side the Padres are in a full out fire sale. They moved James Shields earlier in the year and Melvin Upton Jr. in order to accquire talent for the future.
