The Angels And The Trade Deadline
- Updated: August 3, 2016
The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim made two major moves today at the trade deadline, saying goodbye to two key players. Hector Santiago and Joe Smith, will make their new homes Minneapolis and Chicago.
The team needed a good solid help to their starting rotation, as the smoke cleared, we all were confused on what took place. Hector Santiago, the team’s top pitcher was sent to Minnesota for pitcher’s Ricky Nolasco and Alex Meyer. Meyer is a former number one draft pick of the Washington Nationals in 2011, who made his debut last season. He’s still considered a rookie and has only appeared in two games this season. Nolasco the former Dodger and eleven-year veteran will make Los Angeles his home once again, this time with the Angels.
The second move the Angels made was sending reliever Joe Smith to the Chicago Cubs for a career minor-leaguer Jesus Castillo. Castillo was drafted by the Dodgers in 2003 and has been in the minors and the Mexican leagues ever since. After some intensive research, I couldn’t any record of him pitching in the Majors.
With the departure of Santiago, Matt Shoemaker will take over as the ace of this ball club, with aging vets Jered Weaver and Tim Lincecum to pick up the weight of the starting rotation. This team has been robbed and did not get back any value or prospects in return. With these moves, It’s very clear that the team is looking forward to next season.
