Padres Can’t Hang With Cardinals, Fall 10-2

The San Diego Padres were overwhelmed by the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday night as the club fell 10-2. Mike Leake has been dominant for the Cards as he joined Bob Gibson as the only pitchers in Cardinal history to have ten strikeouts and zero walks in back to back games.
For San Diego Christian Friedrich got the start. He pitched 5.1 innings allowing 6 hits and 4 runs, 3 earned. He walked 5 and struck out 2 as he picked up his 6th loss of the year.
The offense got started in the 4th inning. Matt Kemp hit his 19th home run of the year that put San Diego on the board 1-0.
In the 5th inning Matt Holliday hit a RBI single to left field that Leake and Aledmys Diaz. St. Louis was at it again in the 6th inning when Matt Adams hit a RBI double that brought in Jedd Gyorko and Greg Garcia.
Diaz followed with a RBI triple and Stephen Piscotty hit a RBI single that pushed the Cardinals lead to 6-1.
In the seventh the Padres pushed a run across on a Alexi Amarista ground out that brought Ryan Schimpf in. San Diego trialed 6-2 heading into the bottom of the 7th.
Randal Grichuk hit a 2-run shot to left center that brought in Yadier Molina. Gyorko followed with a solo shot and Piscotty hit a solo shot of his own as the Padres fell 10-2.
San Diego will take on the Cardinals again tonight at 5:15 p.m. PST
