Dodgers’ Late Comeback Falls Short at Arizona

@Dodgers

The Dodgers suffered a tough loss on Sunday, falling one run short of a miraculous comeback.

Kenta Maeda got roughed up for five runs over 4.1 innings, raising his ERA to 3.25. J.P. Howell recorded 1.2 scoreless frames out of the bullpen before handing it off to Chris Hatcher in the seventh, who gave up one which ended up being the difference in the game.

With the Diamondbacks up 6-0 in the eighth, Justin Turner went deep on his 15th HR of the season, a two-run shot, to cut the deficit to 6-2. Louis Coleman tossed a scoreless eighth and we went to the ninth with Arizona in front, 6-2.

With two on and one out in the top of the ninth, Corey Seager doubled to right to plate one. It was a 6-3 game briefly, but that score didn’t last for long thanks to a Justin Turner bases-clearing two-run single. The Dodgers were in business. It was a 6-5 game with runners at the corners, one out, and Yasiel Puig at the plate. A sacrifice fly, base-hit, or maybe even a ground-out would have tied the game, but Puig went down on strikes. Chris Taylor was the Dodgers’ last hope, but he went down on strikes also and the D-Backs escaped with a 6-5 victory.

It was arguably the toughest loss of the season for LA, but the Giants have been cooling off as of late and lost again on Sunday. The Dodgers are still 5.5 games back of San Francisco as the day begins on Monday. The Dodgers will have an off day before beginning a three game set with the Nationals on Tuesday.
