Dodgers erase early deficit, defeat Padres, 4-3

Brandon McCarthy did just enough to earn his 2nd win of the season on Saturday (2-0), tossing 5 solid innings in which he allowed 3 runs. He had thrown only 77 pitches through 5, but he really didn’t have his best stuff and Dave Roberts chose to go to bullpen in the 6th. McCarthy’s night got off to a rocky start when he gave up a 2 run bomb to Yangervis Solarte in the 1st inning, but he settled down and allowed only 1 run over the next 4 innings.

The Dodgers’ bullpen came up big yet again, tossing 4 scoreless frames to help secure the win. Casey FienChris HatcherAdam Liberatore and Joe Blanton all combined for a scoreless 6th, 7th, and 8th, before turning it over to Kenley Jansen in the 9th who sat down the Padres in order and picked up his 26th save of the season, good for 4th best in the NL.

The offense came from an RBI double by Adrian Gonzalez in the bottom of the 1st, a 2 run double by Howie Kendrick in the bottom of the 4th, and an error made by San Diego SS Alexei Ramirez in the bottom of the 5th allowing Corey Seager to score from 3rd on what eventually proved to be the game winning run.

The Dodgers have won back to back games following their brief 3 game losing streak and will look to complete the sweep of the Padres on Sunday afternoon. LA is currently 50-40 on the season, still 6.5 GB of the 1st place Giants in the NL West. Kenta Maeda (7-6, 3.07 ERA) will get the ball for the Dodgers vs Christian Friedrich for the Padres (4-4, 4.42 ERA) on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 PM PST from Dodger Stadium.
