Smith is a former 48th round pick of the San Francisco Giants in the 2011 MLB Draft. He has spent his career in the minor leagues mainly in single and double A.
So far this season he has appeared in 22 games. He sports a 2-1 record with a 7.08 ERA which is nothing to brag about. Smith has struggled to make the adjustment from Double-A from Single A.
In 2015 in Single-A he posted a 4-4 record with a 2.35 ERA. Smith was most likely added for bullpen depth for the Padres who are looking to strength their minor league system.
