Welch has been an assistant coach in the NBA over the last dozen years or so. He worked with the Memphis Grizzlies in 2002 before joining George Karl and the Denver Nuggets in 2005.
After Karl was fired in Denver Welch went on to be an assistant with the Brooklyn Nets and Jason Kidd‘s staff. When Karl made a return to the NBA Welch went with him to the Sacramento Kings last season.
Welch is a highly respected assistant and with the retirement of Kevin Eastman and Lawrence Frank going to the front office it leaves a hole for Welch to fill.
