Garrett Richards To UnderGo Tommy John Surgery

Garrett Richards

The Los Angeles Angels have another injury to deal with. They will be without pitcher Garrett Richards as he undergoes Tommy John surgery.

He has a “high-grade” ulnar collateral ligament tear and said the following to the media after being reminded of his injury luck.

“Yeah,” Richards sighed, “I haven’t had a great couple of years, I suppose. Obviously, I’m disappointed. You can’t help but feel you’re letting your teammates down and abandoning them in the middle of the season.”

As a reminder of the number of players the Angels have to play without:

C.J. Wilson (shoulder inflammation), Tyler Skaggs (still recovering from elbow surgery), Andrew Heaney (strained flexor muscle), and now Garrett Richards.

Teammate feel for Richards. They said:

“You see him work so hard coming back from knee surgery, and he pitched his [tail] off for us last year,” Smith said. “Then you see him walk into spring training strong as an ox, ready to rock. It fires you up to see someone who works as hard as he does. It’s just sad to see him face this kind of injury.”

Richards also said,

“I never threw one pitch that made me think, ‘Oh my gosh, my arm is done. It was just something that progressed.”

Have no fear, Angels fans. Mike Trout won’t be going anywhere any time soon. So at least that’s a positive!

Get well soon Garrett Richards! We will miss you!
