Arizona Diamondbacks 3, San Diego Padres 2

The Arizona Diamondbacks (4-7) were able to win game one of the weekend series against the San Diego Padres (3-8). This was a much-needed win for either club but this game was determined with relief pitching.

Diamondbacks ace Zack Greinke (0-2, 6.75 ERA) [7.1 IP, 6 Hits, 5 K’s, 2 ER] along with Padres ace James Shields (0-2, 4.05 ERA) [7.0 IP, 6 Hits, 6 K’s, 2 ER] will have to wait for their fourth start to qualify for their first win.

In the top of the second inning Diamondbacks catcher Wellington Castillo hit his first home run of the season as Arizona went up 1-0. During the bottom of the second the Padres tied up the score, as second baseman Cory Spangenberg scored via throwing error by Yasmani Tomas.

San Diego would regain the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning as Alexei Amarista hit an RBI single to score catcher Derek Norris. This gave the Padres a 2-1 lead.

It was not until the top of the seventh inning when Arizona tied the game. Nick Ahmed who’s been hitting great, hit an RBI double as Tomas scored to tie the game at 2-2.

The game was decided in the top of the ninth inning as veteran Phil Gosselin hit an RBI single to Padres first baseman Wil Myers. The ultimately gave the win the Arizona as Padres closer Fernando Rodney (0-1, 0.00 ERA) L gave up the tying run.

Diamondbacks closer Brad Ziegler (1-0, 1.80 ERA) W would receive the win after a bases loaded scare in the bottom of the ninth. Game two is in progress as we are in progress of the match up.
