Angels Prospect Spotlight: Kaleb Cowart

@GoHalosGo

Kaleb Cowart: 3B

Age: 23

Drafted: 2010 (1st round 18th pick)

When compared to the rest of the 2010 draft class it’s very easy to tell why fans and team officials alike have grown frustrated with Kaleb Cowart. Cowart was drafted in the same class as bona fide superstars such as Manny Machado, Matt Harvey, Chris Sale and Bryce Harper and after impressing early in his minor league career, has mostly recorded disappointing seasons, particularly at the AA level.

The impatience shown by the organization is warranted, but it might be a bit premature. Cowart is only 23, (younger than Angel’s superstar centerfielder Mike Trout) and improved leaps and bounds after a tough start to the 2015 campaign.

After an unappealing 222./.286./312 combined slash line in two seasons for the Arkansas Travelers, Cowart was promoted to AAA Salt Lake during the 2015 season and the change in scenery did wonders for the young third baseman. Cowart’s final .323/.395/.491 slash line was refreshing and reassuring not just for the club, but for their young third baseman as well.

As a result Cowart was awarded an opportunity to showcase his skills at the Major League level when Angels starter Conor Gillaspie was designated for assignment. While he did struggle a bit at the big league level, it’s important to note that he got just 52 at bats in 34 games at the big league level, all of them while the Angels were attempting to make a push toward the playoffs.

One thing the club won’t have to worry about is his defense. Cowart may be the best third baseman in the minor leagues right now. His fluid hands and rocket of an arm, combined with his quick feet make difficult plays easy for him and give him incredible range at the hot-corner.

With the departure of David Freese and the arrival of Yunel Escobar, Cowart is in the same position as last year and barring a breakout performance in Spring Training, he should once again start the season in the minor leagues. That being said Cowart could spend a little bit of time with the Angels this year if there are any injuries and could possibly get an extended look if the Angels find themselves out of playoff contention early in the season.
