Byron Scott Shocked RE: David Blatt

Byron Scott

It was a stranger day for the NBA yesterday. A day that started with the trading (back) of Josh Smith to Houston, added Steve Kerr back to the GSW bench, and ended with the firing of David Blatt.

The latter is something that has puzzled many, although I think we can all agree, the King, LeBron James, one of the greatest players on the planet, can be a little influential when he needs to be. David Blatt was let go by the Cleveland Cavaliers although they sit atop of the Eastern Conference standings, and are making major strides back to their Finals spot for the 2016 season. It is all realize of course.

On the outside it looks like Blatt was a great coach. He left the team with a record of 83-40, and took the team to the NBA Finals in his first season. How much is David Blatt really to be credited for? He does have some of the best players in the league on his side. (Kevin Love, Kyrie Irving, etc.)

When asked about his response to the organizational change of the Cavs, Lakers HC Byron Scott was admittedly baffled. (As were many other’s in the league – see Scott Skiles‘ response). The Los Angeles Daily News writes the following from Byron Scott:

“You try to figure out what didn’t he do and what did he do in this case that was so wrong that he got fired,” Scott said before the Lakers played San Antonio at Staples Center. “You shake your head and just wonder. I definitely feel bad for him, and my prayers are out to him and to his family.”

“I evaluate myself and wake up every morning and try to do the best I can. I still believe great players make great coaches,” Byron Scott said. “Those players have to be willing to buy into your beliefs.”

As I scrolled through Twitter yesterday, I noticed quite a few of the Lakers’ Faithful questioning the timing of Blatt vs. Scott. Many of you were wondering why someone who has consecutive helped the Lakers to the worst record in the Western Conference would be granted immunity, when David Blatt has done nothing wrong (unless you count appeasing player’s egos).

It seems from the outside that the Lakers are quite comfortable with being sympathetic to the young team, and let’s be honest, their ex-palyer. He isn’t off the hook though, more than likely his tenure won’t last, and they will let him go at the end of the season.

Kobe Bryant had some interesting words to say about the situation:

“the job security around here is crazy (bleep) man!”

But wait, there’s more. He said the following of ex-teammate and new Cavs HC, Tyronn Lue:

“He knows what to do,” Bryant said. “We’ve played together for a while. He’s obviously played under great mentorship and great coaching. He knows what to do. He knows spread them out, move the ball. He understands sequences versus plays. I’m sure he’ll get those guys changing sides of the floor and running automatics and all those good things. He’ll be fine.”
