Happy Martin Luther King Jr Day
- Updated: January 18, 2016
On behalf of the CaliSports News Family I want to wish everyone a Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day. As we reflect on the life and impact that Dr. King had our lives and nation one can’t show enough gratitude for his mission for equality.
As a millennial I wasn’t around to watch Dr. King’s speeches live, or go to schools that were segregated by the state, but I like many of us can imagine what it was like during that time and how much progress has been made.
In the sports world there have been significant movement on diversity. The Los Angeles Dodgers hired their first minority manager when Dave Roberts was hired this offseason.
The NFL has put together the Rooney rule to help make sure minorities get a fair shake when it comes to the hiring of their coaches and front office positions.
I read an article this morning by ESPN writer J.A. Adande discussing the NBA and their executives. Check it out here.
I say all this to say there is progress being made in sports and across America. It may not be happening as fast as some of us would like but it is happening. A wise man once told me “Don’t let your ambitions overshadow small successes.” As we continue to make small strides as a society for totally equality we need to be humble and gracious with that movement and continue to make that effort.
Dr.King thank you for everything you did. I can only hope that society will be in a better place for the next generation as it is now.
