Padres Trade Two Players to Atlanta Braves for catcher Christian Bethancourt
- Updated: December 13, 2015
According to Cash Kruth of MLB.com the San Diego Padres have acquired catcher Christian Bethancourt in exchange for two pitchers Casey Kelly and prospect Ricardo Rodriguez. Bethancourt was the main piece of the trade here as the Padres are getting an above average catcher.
Bethancourt is only 23 years old and has many MLB seasons to go. His batting average for the Braves this past season was (.200) to go with (2) home runs and (12) RBI’s. That is not to say that he can’t have a bounce back season with the Padres being that he is so young. Plus many should consider that the Braves are rebuilding so those stats aren’t as bad for one out of his three MLB seasons.
Atlanta now picks up two relatively young arms in Kelly and Rodriguez. Kelly is 26 and has only pitched in the major leagues for two seasons. His career record is (2-6) to go with an ERA of (6.69) through 36 total games. There is potential in which he could play better for the Braves. Rodriguez is who is only 17 years old. So the assumption there is that he’ll be in the farm system of the Braves for quite some time.
Once again the Padres make yet another move vying to ensure more depth of all positions. As well as trying to stay competitive in the National League West that just got better with other teams making moves.
