RECAP: Angels 6, Astros 5

Both bullpens faltered late in the game Wednesday afternoon, but the Los Angeles Angels came out on top, defeating the Houston Astros 6-5 in a key AL West matchup at Minute Maid Park.

The Angels jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning in Houston, when C.J. Cron drove in Kole Calhoun and Mike Trout to give the Halos an early lead on the road in a very important American League West matchup for both clubs.

That lead would hold for quite a while, as both Fiers and Angels’ starter Nick Tropeano settled in and threw zeros at their respective opposing lineups until the top of the fifth inning.

In the fifth, the Angels struck again when Calhoun hit a solo home run off Fiers, making the game 3-0.

But, in the bottom of the fifth, the Astros got two runs back, making the game close again and finally tagging Tropeano with runs — although, thanks to an error earlier in the inning by Erick Aybar, both runs were unearned.

It started with George Springer‘s RBI single that scored Max Stassi, and then Carlos Correa drove in Jose Altuve with a fielder’s choice groundout to make it a 3-2 game after five frames.

The Angels’ bullpen struggled on this day game, though; Jose Alvarez and Trevor Gott were tagged for a pair of runs in the seventh inning when Springer tripled home Altuve and Jake Marisnick, and the Astros took a late lead at 4-3 into the eighth inning.

The Halos’ offense rallied back for two runs in the top of the eighth inning, though. David Freese hit a 2-RBI double off Astros’ reliever Pat Neshek that scored Trout and Collin Cowgill, and absolved Gott of what would’ve been a bullpen loss.

Carlos Perez then singled off Neshek, scoring Kaleb Cowart, which put the Angels up 6-4. That late rally would hold up for the Halos; despite allowing a run in the ninth with two outs, Huston Street closed things down for a 6-5 Angels’ victory.

Next up, the Angels travel to Seattle for a three-game set against the Mariners this weekend.
