The San Diego Padres overcame a mediocre start from James Shields and pounded out 11 runs and 18 hits on their way to an 11-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday night from Petco Park..
The Rockies started the scoring off very early, when in the top of the first, Justin Morneau and DJ LeMahieu each hit RBI singles off Padres’ starter James Shields. With it, Colorado took a 2-0 lead for their starter, Chris Rusin, who threw a complete game shutout against the Padres the last time the two teams met earlier in August.
Unfortunately for Rusin, though, he wasn’t nearly the same pitcher on Wednesday night. In the bottom of the first, Matt Kemp hit an opposite field home run to cut the Rockies’ lead in half.
Then in the bottom of the second, command got away from Rusin, and with the bases loaded he walked James Shields on four pitches to tie the game at 2-2 after two full innings.
In the bottom of the third, Jedd Gyorko smashed a three-run home run — his 14th of the year — right down the left field line off Rusin, giving the Friars the early 5-2 lead. The Padres would then add a fourth run that inning on back-to-back doubles from Derek Norris and Melvin Upton, Jr, to make it 6-2 — and eventually run Rusin from the game.
The Rockies rallied back for two runs in the top of the fourth, though, when Dustin Garneau slugged the first home run of his career to left-center field off Shields to make the game 6-4.
The Padres would blow open the game in the sixth and seventh innings, though, beginning with a three-run sixth off Rockies’ reliever Simon Castro. In that frame, the Friars got RBI singles from Yangervis Solarte and Wil Myers, and an RBI fielder’s choice off the bat of Matt Kemp.
Then, in the seventh, San Diego got two more runs on two more RBI singles by Solarte and Myers that made the game 11-4 and put the Rockies completely out of it with six outs to go.
The Rockies never mustered another rally, and the Padres coasted to an easy victory, their 67th of the season.
The Rockies and Padres will finish up their series on Thursday afternoon from downtown San Diego’s Petco Park. Then, the Padres head to San Francisco for three games against the Giants at AT&T Park.
