A bottom of the ninth inning walk-off fielder’s choice gave the San Diego Padres a 2-1 victory Tuesday night at Petco Park over the struggling Colorado Rockies.
The Rockies and Padres were deadlocked in a tie for much of the game — and a scoreless tie at that, thanks to great starting pitching performances by Colorado’s Jon Gray, and San Diego’s Colin Rea.
Gray ended up going five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out six. But, he was lifted in the sixth thanks to a conservative pitch count.
Rea, on the other hand, went seven full innings for the Padres, which was the longest start of his young career so far by both innings and pitch count (he finished at just a shade under 100 pitches).
He was given an offensive boost in the top of the sixth when, off Rockies’ reliever Gonzalez Germen, Wil Myers slugged a solo home run to make it 1-0 San Diego.
That 1-0 lead held into the top of the ninth inning, when Padres’ closer Craig Kimbrel came on to shut things down. With two outs and nobody on, though, he allowed a solo home run to Nolan Arenado that tied the game at one, and blew the save for the Friars’ closer.
That blown save wasn’t the end of the world, though, because in the bottom of the ninth inning, Cory Spangenberg led off with a double off Rockies’ reliever Boone Logan. Then, after Clint Barmes bunted Spangenberg to third base, Brett Wallace brought him in on the walk-off winner with a fielder’s choice to Rockies’ shortstop Jose Reyes.
The throw home from Reyes was late, and the Padres won 2-1 on the walk-off.
