Recap: Angels 8, Tigers 7

The Los Angeles Angels (64-61) took game one of this three game series against the Detroit Tigers (59-66) This was a much needed win for the Angels as they’re looking to play for the A.L. Wild Card.

Angels starting pitcher Jered Weaver (6-9, 4.59 ERA, 5.2 IP, 1 K, 7 Hits, 6 ER) (W) faced Alfredo Simon (11-8, 4.89 ERA, 4.1 IP, 2 K’s, 9 Hits, 8 ER) (L) The scoring started early on for the Angels.

In the top of the first Angels first baseman Albert Pujols (1-4, R, HR, 3 RBI) hit his 554th career home run. A three-run blast to left field as Kole Calhoun (0-4, R, K, BB) and Mike Trout (1-4, R, 2 K, BB) scored.

Left fielder David Murphy (2-5, 2 R) scored on a wild pitch from Alfredo Simon as the Angels lead 4-0 by the end of the first inning.

The Detroit Tigers managed to tie the game during the bottom of the third inning. Tigers DH Miguel Cabrera (3-5, 2 R, 3 RBI) hit a three-run RBI double to left field. Detroit’s right fielder J.D. Martinez hit an RBI single as Cabrera scored to tie the game 1-1.

In the top of the fourth the Angels regained the lead scoring two more runs as they led 6-4. By the end of the fifth inning the score was 8-4 Los Angeles.

The Tigers almost came back to make it interesting. In the bottom of the sixth Tigers catcher James McCann (2-5, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI) hit a two-run home run to left field as J.D. Martinez scored. Third baseman Nick Castellanos (2-5, RBI, K) hit an RBI single as the final score was here was 8-7 Angels.

Angels closer Huston Street earned save number (30). This afternoon at 4:05 PM PT game two will begin. Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Hector Santiago (7-7, 2.91 ERA) will take on Detroit Tigers starter Justin Verlander (1-6, 3.86 ERA)
