The San Diego Padres put up three runs in the sixth and seventh innings combined, and in doing so, held off the Atlanta Braves for a 3-2 victory on Wednesday afternoon and a series sweep at Petco Park.
The Braves got on the board first in the top of the third inning, when Nick Markakis hit an RBI single off Padres’ starter Tyson Ross, though the lead wouldn’t last and the Padres would eventually figure out Braves’ starter Julio Teheran.
That started in the sixth inning, when Yangervis Solarte slugged a solo home run to right field off Teheran to tie the game at one run apiece.
It’d then continue in the seventh inning, when Austin Hedges doubled home Cameron Maybin, and then Solarte doubled home Hedges, both off Braves’ reliever Matt Marksberry.
Markakis would add an RBI double to his totals in the top of the eighth inning off Joaquin Benoit, but it wasn’t enough for the Braves, who were swept out of San Diego with the 3-2 Padres’ victory.
With the victory, the Padres inch another game closer to .500 as they seek to make a postseason run, though they have a very tough schedule ahead of them, filled with quality teams that are likely playoff participants.
