Recap: Padres 7, Rockies 5

The San Diego Padres have won the series against the Colorado Rockies. Winning game two out of three puts them two games behind the Arizona Diamondbacks (57-58) in the race for the National League West.

Both starting pitchers received a no-decision. Padres starter Andrew Cashner (4-12, 4.20 ERA, 5.0 IP, 2 K’s, 7 Hits, 1 ER) struggled against the Rockies lineup giving up four runs. Rockies starting pitcher Jon Gray (0-0, 2.40 ERA, 5.0 IP, 5 K’s, 4 Hits, 1 ER) only allowed one run through five innings.

In the top of the first inning San Diego took a quick 1-0 lead as Matt Kemp hit a sacrifice fly to right field as third baseman Yangervis Solarte scored. Colorado quickly responded in the bottom of the first inning. Rockies center fielder Charlie Blackmon scored to tie the game at 1-1.

During the bottom of the third inning, Nolan Arenado hit a two-run RBI double to center field as Jon Gray and Jose Reyes scored giving the Rockies a 3-1 lead. It wouldn’t be until the top of the sixth inning when runs were scored again.

The Padres scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning. They quickly regained the lead at 4-3. This lead didn’t last long as Colorado scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning taking the lead at 5-4.

In the top of the ninth inning the Padres managed to tie the game at 5-5. Padres pinch hitter Brett Wallace hit an RBI single to center field as the Padres led 6-5. Yangervis Solarte hit a sacrifice fly to center field as Melvin Upton Jr. scored the final run of the game as the final was 7-5 San Diego.

Padres relieve pitcher Kevin Quackenbush (2-2, 4.05 ERA) (W) received the win, while Rockies reliever Tommy Kahnie (0-1, 3.86 ERA) (L) lost this game. San Diego’s closer Craig Kimbrel earned his 33rd save of the season.

This afternoon at 1:10 PM PT the series finale will begin. Padres starter Ian Kennedy (7-10, 4.37 ERA will face Chris Rusin (3-5, 4.43 ERA) as San Diego tries to sweep the Rockies.
