In the final game of the weekend series with Philadelphia, the Padres lose 5-3 and got swept.

The losing streak has now reached five games, as the Philadelphia Phillies, the majors worst team, get another win.

The Phillies got on the scoreboard in the top first inning and adding another run in the top of the sixth. The Padres got within a run in the bottom of the sixth, on a Justin Upton homer to deep left field, his 19th of the season, off of Phillies starter Jerome Williams,(4-8), who picked up the win. Philadelphia added two more runs in the seventh and eight, extending the lead to a four run deficit at 5-1.

In the final two innings, the Padres tried to make a come back, in the eight inning, Yangervis Solarte, came through with a single to right field, to score Alexi Armarista, cutting the lead to a three run margin. San Diego was on the comeback trail in the bottom of the ninth inning, Jedd Gyorko led off the inning with a single to left center field and managed to get to second on a fielder’s indifference,(which means that the runner advanced without being held on by the first baseman, but the play is not considered as a stolen base). Will Venable singled to center, that scored Gyorko, with the games final run.

Padres starter Andrew Cashner,(4-12), took the loss and Phillies reliever Ken Giles picked up his sixth save of the season. The Padres have now dropped their last two series, to teams that have sub .500 records, in Milwaukee and Philadelphia.

The team will remain at home to open up a three game series with the Cincinnati Reds. San Diego,(52-60), will send Ian Kennedy,(6-10, 4.49 ERA), to the mound to face Cincinnati’s David Holmberg,(1-0, 3.27 ERA). Philadelphia,(45-67), has moved out of the National League East basement into fourth place but still are 14.5 games behind the first place, red-hot New York Mets. The Padres are in fourth place in the National League West, 11 full games behind the first place Los Angeles Dodgers.
