RECAP: Dodgers 10, Phillies 8

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies combined for eight first-inning runs on the way to a slugfest at Philadelphia’s Citizen’s Bank Park, with the visiting Dodgers eventually outlasting the host Phillies 10-8 on Thursday afternoon.

The Dodgers got started with three runs in the top of the first inning, when Andre Ether doubled home a run, followed by Carl Crawford‘s 2-RBI single to give the team and starter Zack Greinke a seemingly insurmountable lead based on how the ace has been throwing this season.

Only… the lead was overtaken almost immediately. The Phillies scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning, after Ryan Howard brought in two with an RBI single, and Domonic Brown followed up with a three-run home run off Greinke to give the Phils a 5-3 lead.

The Dodgers put up three more runs in the top of the second inning to retake the lead on Adrian Gonzalez‘s three-run bomb off Phillies’ starter David Buchanan.

In the top of the third inning, Greinke helped himself with his own solo home run off Buchanan, making the score 7-5 (and bat flipping his way to first base!).

But, in the bottom of the third, the Phillies got another run back, refusing to go away thanks to Brown’s RBI single that scored Maikel Franco.

The game calmed down somewhat after that, with the Dodgers leading 7-6. Nobody scored again until the top of the sixth inning, when a Howie Kendrick double brought home two runs, and Yasmani Grandal‘s sacrifice fly later scored Kendrick, giving the Dodgers their first commanding lead of the day at 10-6 through six innings.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Phillies briefly made things interesting by scoring two runs on a 2-RBI double off Kenley Jansen that scored runners charged to reliever Joel Peralta, but Jansen then finally nailed down the save and staved off the Phillies’ wild rally.

Greinke earned a win in addition to his home run at the plate, though it was an uncharacteristic one by his standards: six earned runs in six innings on seven hits and two walks, while striking out eight hitters. J.P. Howell and Juan Nicasio combined for two scoreless innings in relief before Peralta faltered and Jansen closed things down.
