The NHL and MLB are making moves to improve their services for their fans. The two organizations announced a deal worth $600 million on Tuesday.
This will allow the MLB to have control of the rights to all of the out-of-market TV broadcasting and Internet streaming. The NHL will recieve a 7 to 10 equity stake to MLBAM, according to The Variety.
Why does this deal make sense? Well because this organization isn’t just concerned with baseball. They are also major dealers in streaming services across different leagues. And it’s not just sports, in December they managed to take over a failed deal with HBO’s in-house streaming service, to sign them for themselves. It is because of MLBAM that there will now be an HBO streaming network available to rival the likes of Netflix (***cue the heavenly music***) and Amazon Prime.
There are whispers around the business world that MLBAM might be spinning off from their MLB counterparts to become their own company.
The NHL Commissioner said that the fans of NHL’s GameCenter Live can relax because this portion of the NHL will largely remain unchanged. He made the following very important statement which was a part of his press release on the subject:
“We’re not turning baseball into hockey and baseball isn’t turning hockey into baseball. We’re each going to do our own things in terms of how the content is created.”
It looks like the NHL digital world will be getting a revamp, and that might not be such a bad thing. Most companies are now having to strengthen and beef up their digital strategy department because of the ever changing world, and demands, of the fans watching the games. It is crucial to stay on top of these things as the heads of the leagues, because you don’t want to be left in the dust in this quickly changing world.
This decision has been made for you, the fans. I’ll leave you with this quote from the President of the MLB:
“If 700,000 people want one live stream, it has to work,” he said. “That’s important.”
