Los Angeles Clippers Press Conference Review

The Los Angeles Clippers held their press conference for their offseason additions yesterday afternoon. For those who don’t know Doc Rivers the President of Basketball Operations and head coach has been quite busy this summer.

He started off the summer with acquiring Lance Stephenson from the Charlotte Hornets. Proceeded to sign Wesley Johnson from the Lakers and Paul Pierce from the Wizards. We all know the DeAndre Jordan series of events.

He then acquired a draft pick in order to draft Branden Dawson, signed Josh Smith and Cole Aldrich and then re-signed his son Austin Rivers. The Clippers had depth issues last season that showed in the playoffs and it looks as if those issues are dead and gone.

Paul Pierce and Doc go back to their playing days in Boston and Pierce was quoted that he came to the Clippers because he felt that they had a chance to win a championship. He mentioned this would be his last ride in the NBA and he wanted to end it on a high note.

Johnson who has played for the Phoenix Suns, Minnesota Timberwolves, and most recently the Lakers has never been on a contending team. He spoke about being  ready to soak up the knowledge of players like Chris Paul and Pierce and was ready to win.

Smith who is taking a sacrifice of money and playing time most likely said that this group of players has a legitimate shot to win the title and that winning is that matters.

If one thing echoed it was that every new player had the same agenda “Just win baby, just win.” It makes sense though, for any of these players other than Jordan they probably could have got more money elsewhere.

All of the players brought in are veteran guys who have had their time of putting up big numbers on bad teams. They know it’s not fun and it’s definitely not worth it. People don’t remember Pierce from the years in Boston before the championship, they remember him as the guy who hit the big shots and lead Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett, and Rajon Rondo to that 2008 NBA Finals Championship.

Jordan is hoping for the same result. If the Clippers win a championship people will people the whole Mark Cuban Dallas Mavericks fiasco behind them and think of Jordan as a champion first, defender second.

Building a championship team takes a long time. If you have to fall on your face a few times. You have to have the odds against you most of the time. It’s something that Clippers have gone through in the past and will go through again this season.

Even with all the additions people are still more intrigued by the San Antonio Spurs with the LaMarcus Aldridge addition. The Warriors are still the champs with the MVP Stephen Curry, and the Rockets just added the speedy troubled point guard Ty Lawson to their already dangerous team.

The West is extremely dangerous but the Clippers will be in the middle of the hunt again. As a fan that’s all you want. You want your team to compete and have a chance at the title. That’s more than most teams can say next season.
