Clayton Kershaw was dominant for eight innings, and the Los Angeles Dodgers held on in the ninth despite a Bryce Harper home run, beating the Washington Nationals 4-2 on Saturday afternoon in Washington, D.C.
Kershaw was masterful yet again in his first start back from the All Star Break, continuing his trend of phenomenal outings. In this one, he stymied the Nationals for eight innings, allowing just three hits and no walks while striking out 14 hitters in the process.
The only blemish the Nationals could get off Los Angeles was in the bottom of the ninth, when Harper hit a two-run blast off closer Kenley Jansen.
The Dodgers got their four runs early, with Yasiel Puig hitting a single to score the first Dodger run in the second inning, followed by the road club taking advantage of a three-run fifth inning off Nationals’ starter Doug Fister.
RBI singles from Justin Turner and Puig, and a sacrifice fly from Andre Ethier, put the Dodgers up 4-0 on a lead that would stay until the final frame.
With the win, the Dodgers avenge their loss earlier on Saturday afternoon in a continuation of Friday night’s lighting-postponed game.
At 52-40, the Dodgers — still the NL West’s best team — will face the Nationals Sunday morning in the series’ final game.
