RECAP: Mariners 7, Padres 0

The Seattle Mariners blanked the San Diego Padres on Wednesday afternoon, winning 7-0 and relying on a phenomenal start from Taijuan Walker to shut out the Friars for the second straight day while sending James Shields to his this loss of the season.

The Padres never figured out Walker, who allowed one hit and no walks in six innings, striking out seven Padres’ hitters and lowering his ERA on the season to 4.34 after a rough start to the year. Four Mariners relievers then combined to allow just three hits and a walk while striking out three, shutting out the Padres and re-igniting questions about San Diego’s offense.

Shields, on the other hand, wasn’t as sharp on Wednesday. He allowed only two runs on just four hits, but also walked four hitters and threw just 69 of his 117 pitches for strikes over 6.2 innings, adding seven strikeouts to his ledger.

The Mariners broke the game open late when Kevin Quackenbush allowed four runs (just three earned) in 1.1 innings of relief in the eighth and ninth innings.

But ultimately, that was all insurance; the runs that mattered for the Mariners happened in the sixth and seventh off Shields, and both scored due to Robinson Cano — one on a solo homer in the sixth, and the next on an RBI single in the seventh.

With the loss, the Padres are now 37-43 and fading fast in the National League West, due to play their 81st game — exactly halfway through the season — the next time they take the field.
