Taylor Featherston hit an RBI single in the bottom of the 13th inning to score Erick Aybar and give the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim a 2-1 victory Wednesday afternoon over the Houston Astros.
Andrew Heaney made his first start for the Angels in the day game, and threw a gem, tossing six innings and allowing just one run on four hits and a walk while striking out five Astros’ hitters across 83 pitches and 53 strikes.
The game was a pitcher’s duel, with Lance McCullers starting for the Astros and also allowing just one run in six innings of work, stymying Angels’ hitters that had recently been hotter at the plate than they had all season — at least until Wednesday.
The Angels got their run first, when Chris Iannetta hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to bring home Albert Pujols and make it a 1-0 game.
The Astros got their run back in the top of the sixth inning, Heaney’s last, when Carlos Correa doubled home Jose Altuve to make the game 1-1. That score, though, would hold into the late innings of the game on this getaway day afternoon contest at Angel Stadium.
After neither team could pick up a run after nine innings, the 1-1 game entered extras, and lasted until the 13th inning. In the bottom of the 13th, Taylor Featherston’s single scored Erick Aybar from second base to give the Angels a walk-off victory.
After an off-day on Thursday, the Angels will face the Seattle Mariners over the weekend.
