Thanks to a homer in the first inning the Los Angeles Angels were able to beat the Oakland A’s 1-0 tonight.
It was Albert Pujols who homered, and it marked his 538th! He raised his RBI total to 1,636, which ties him with Ernie Banks for 29th place on the all-time home run list. ESPN.com reports the following on Pujols upcoming achievements:
“Pujols, who needs one stolen base to join Babe Ruth, Willie Mays and Hank Aaron as the only players with at least 300 steals, .500 homers and a .300 career batting average, was thrown out at second by catcher Josh Phegley in the sixth.”
C.J. Wilson pitched seven innings for the Angels tonight. He struck out eight and walked three, which marked the first scoreless outing since April 7th.
Billy Burns had a leadoff single in the first inning which became Oakland’s only hit until the fifth. That was until Stephen Vogt hit a two-out double, following a walk to Brett Lawrie. Wilson was able to escape the bind by striking out Sam Fuld. Fuld came in at 4 for 11 against Wilson with three RBI and no strikeouts.
Josh Smith impressively pitched the perfect eighth inning which then allowed Huston Street to get three outs for his 19th save in 21 attempts.
The Angels and A’s will go at it again tomorrow at 12:35 p.m.!
