RECAP: Padres 6, Braves 4 (F/11)

After being down 4-1 entering the eighth inning, the San Diego Padres took advantage of some bizarre plays — including a catcher’s interference — and timely hitting in the eleventh inning to beat the Atlanta Braves 6-4 on Thursday afternoon at Turner Field.

The game started with fireworks, when Matt Kemp was plunked by a pitch from Julio Teheran in the top of the first inning, on an 0-2 count with two outs. The benches cleared, before Kemp was taken down by home plate umpire Jordan Baker to stop the madness.

Warnings were issued after that — and the next half inning, when Andrew Cashner hit an Atlanta Braves batter with a pitch — but the game settled down quickly after that.

Each team did score in the first inning, though, as the hit-by-pitches backfired on each pitcher, and the Braves and Padres went to the second in a 1-1 tie.

The Braves pushed across a single run in the sixth inning off Padres’ starter Cashner when Freddie Freeman hit a solo home run, to make it a 2-1 game.

In the seventh, the Braves pushed across two more runs, first on a questionable infield single from Jace Peterson — who inadvertently hit the ball twice on the way out of the batter’s box — and then on a sacrifice fly.

Peterson’s play — which all four umpires missed — should have been called a foul ball, but with no replay available, the call was upheld and Padres’ manager Bud Black was ejected arguing out.

Nevertheless, the Braves were coasting into the eighth inning, leading 4-1 at that point and having only allowed two Padres hits through the first seven frames.

Teheran tired in the eighth, and the Padres rallied for three unlikely runs in the eighth, first off him, and later off reliever Luis Avilan and David Aardsma.

The fun started that inning for the Padres on a passed ball that scored Alexi Amarista, and then continued on a bases loaded walk of Yonder Alonso by Avilan that made it a 4-3 game.

The biggest — and most bizarre — play of the inning was a two-out, two-strike catcher’s interference call on a foul ball. Christian Bethancourt, the Braves’ catcher, was called for CI when his glove nicked Cory Spangenberg‘s bat as he was fouling off an 0-2 pitch, and with the bases loaded, every runner moved up one base to tie the game.

The tie ensured Cashner earned a no-decision after a string of tough luck losses this year. The starter threw 6.2 innings, allowing seven hits and four walks, striking out just one Braves hitter and throwing 57 of his 96 pitches for strikes.

After going to extra innings with a 4-4 tie, the Padres were able to push two runs across in the top of the eleventh inning after Yangervis Solarte hit a bases-loaded single to right field, completing the comeback at Turner Field.

Craig Kimbrel came on for the bottom of the eleventh, and promptly disposed of the Braves, with a groundout and two strikeouts.

The Padres salvaged a split in the four-game series, and head home to Petco Park with a huge series against the Los Angeles Dodgers looming.
