The San Diego Padres pushed across two runs in the top of the 11th inning to break a 3-3 tie, and former Brave Craig Kimbrel threw a perfect 11th inning for the save, as the Padres defeated the Atlanta Braves 5-3 on Monday night at Turner Field.

The Padres started the scoring when Cory Spangenberg hit an RBI double in the second inning off Braves’ starter Shelby Miller, giving the Friars the early lead.

The Braves got three runs back in the third though, although those would be the only runs allowed all night by Padres’ starter Ian Kennedy, who threw well in the no-decision.

Kennedy went five innings, allowing eight hits and no walks while striking out six Braves’ hitters, and the Padres bullpen threw six shutout innings to nail down the victory as the game went into extras.

To get to extra innings, though, the Padres had to push across single runs in the eighth and ninth innings off the Braves’ bullpen, starting with former Brave Justin Upton‘s RBI groundout in the eighth off set-up man Jim Johnson.

Then, in the ninth, Upton’s brother – and another former Brave – Melvin Upton Jr. scored on a sacrifice fly to tie the game and send it to extras.

In the eleventh, RBI doubles by Matt Kemp and Alexi Amarista plated two runs, and Kimbrel was perfect to shut the door in the bottom half of the frame, sealing the victory for the Padres.

The Padres (now 30-29) will see Atlanta for two more games, before coming home to face the Los Angeles Dodgers at Petco Park in a very important NL West series.
