“Jawing” With MLB Umpires

(Photo via Twitter User )

When we all go out to the ballpark we notice several things that make up the elements of a game.  We all notice the umpires because they are the ones that keep the order in the game.  Everyone has noticed a play in which an umpire has also made a bad call.  Recently, I noticed that around the baseball there are more players that have been challenging their calls of balls and strikes at the plate.

Remember back to days when managers. like Tommy Lasorda and Earl Weaver, went on literally “warpaths” when they had to argue with the umpires.  My point is simple, there has been a real rise in the ejections in baseball and the term “Jawing” is at an all time high.    On Sunday afternoon, Los Angeles Dodgers rookie, Joc Pederson, was called out on a strikeout, after Pederson made a few comments (nothing that I could pick up by reading lips), before returning to the dugout.  Okay, we all know that all umpires have different strike zones but nothing is written in stone.  I remember when the strike zone was letter high, (of the players jersey), to just above the knees but now we are not even sure where the strike zone is.   When we go out to the ball park we shouldn’t know the names of any umpire but here are a few that have the best strike zone in the game.  In an article from, SportsDaily.net, by Brian Wright in  2014, he listed the best and worst umpires in baseball.  Unfortunately, the crew that called last Sunday night’s game, between the St. Louis Cardinals and our Los Angeles Dodgers, none of the umpires were on either list of best or worst.

Finally, this article is to gain the awareness of how much the umpires are getting into more spats with players and the players are reacting to the umpires calls.  We all have seen bad calls from umpires but the “jawing” between the batters and the umpires has risen this season.  I have noticed this and if you pay close attention, you also will notice that players are questioning the call of balls and strikes more than ever.
