The San Diego Padres jumped out to a seven-run lead, and held on late as they defeated the New York Mets Wednesday night, 7-3, in downtown San Diego at beautiful Petco Park.
The Padres jumped out to a lead early off Mets’ starter Dillon Gee, when they loaded the bases and then scored runs on a Yonder Alonso hit by pitch, and a sacrifice fly by Will Middlebrooks, taking a 2-0 lead after one frame.
The Padres got two more runs in the bottom of the fourth, when Will Venable brought in two with a single off Gee.
The Padres then eventually chased Gee in the bottom of the fifth, when they added three more runs, first with Alonso reaching on a fielder’s choice error that scored a run, and then by a Middlebrooks single that plated two more runs.
That was the end of the road for Gee, who ended up allowing seven runs (but just four earned) in four-plus innings against San Diego.
The Padres’ starter, James Shields, fared much better Wednesday night, tossing seven innings and allowing just two runs on six hits, striking out four and lowering his ERA to 3.58 in the process.
The Mets scored those blemishes off Shields with single runs in both the sixth and seventh innings, but the Padres entered the ninth inning with a comfortable 7-2 lead.
In the ninth, getting some work in, Craig Kimbrel struggled, allowing two hits, a walk, and an unearned run.
Eventually, though, with the bases loaded in a 7-3 game, he induced a ground ball to second base that wrapped it up and sealed the victory for the Padres.
After getting Thursday off, the Padres (27-28) begin a weekend in Cincinnati against the struggling Cincinnati Reds.
