RECAP: Mets 7, Padres 0

Andrew Cashner had a historic day on the mound – but not entirely for the best of reasons – and the Padres eked out a measly two hits the entire game, losing 7-0 to the New York Mets in the first game of their mid-week series at Petco Park.

In the top of the first inning, the Mets pushed two runs across the plate, first on a Daniel Murphy RBI single, and later on an error by Will Middlebrooks that scored Murphy to make the game 2-0.

The game held like that until the fifth inning, when the Mets pushed across four more runs off Cashner. It started with a two-run home run by Murphy, and it continued with two more RBI singles that made the game 6-0 after five innings.

Cashner didn’t make it out of the fifth, throwing 4.2 innings and allowing 11 hits – and no walks – while striking out twelve batters and giving up six runs (five earned).

Cashner’s line – double-digit hits and double-digit strikeouts, without making it through five innings pitched – is the first time in big league history a pitcher has ever accomplished that feat.

In the seventh inning, the Mets scored one more run on another RBI single, this time off Kevin Quackenbush, to go up 7-0 on the night.

The Padres could never answer, as Mets starter Jacob deGrom was brilliant, allowing just two hits and no runs against eight strikeouts in eight innings.

With the loss, the Padres now fall to 25-28 on the season.
