RECAP: Angels 4, Padres 3

The Los Angeles Angels got a walk-off single from Albert Pujols in the bottom of the ninth inning after Mike Trout had been intentionally walked, to earn a 4-3 victory over the San Diego Padres Monday night in Anaheim.

The win pushes the Angels record to 23-22, back over .500 again for a team that came into the year with high expectations.

Similarly, the loss leaves the Padres 21-25, a team going the wrong way in a year that was supposed to see them breakout as a contender in the National League West.

The Angels eked out single runs in the second, fourth, and fifth innings off Padres starter Tyson Ross to build a lead for their hurler, Jered Weaver, who cruised through the Padres lineup the first few times through the order.

Ross himself didn’t fare too badly, allowing three runs – and just two earned – on ten hits and a walk over six innings, while striking out seven Angels’ hitters.

Weaver, who went into the seventh inning with a shutout, eventually allowed one run (that was scored off a reliever) when the Padres were able to push three across in the frame to tie the game.

Weaver had a great night, though, going 6.2 innings and allowing just the run on six hits and a walk, while striking out seven Padres’ hitters.

San Diego did their only damage after Weaver had left, though, when they scored three runs off Jose Alvarez, who allowed a walk and two hits while failing to record an out in the inning.

Fernando Salas eventually got out of the jam for Alvarez with the tie salvaged, setting up Pujols’ heroics just an inning and a half later.

That set the stage for Pujols, whose single sealed the deal for the Angels. The Padres – and closer Craig Kimbrel – decided to walk Trout to set up Pujols’ at-bat in a bit of a ‘damned if you do, damned if you don’t’ choice (and one the Angels have been hoping teams will keep making after pairing the two sluggers back-to-back in the lineup).

The Padres and Angels will face each other again Tuesday night in Anaheim.
