According to reports around the league, Paul Pierce will opt out of his deal with the Washington Wizards to play out the rest of his career with the Los Angeles Clippers.
The following was reported by David Aldridge on Bleacher Report:
“Washington’s main issue is complacency. The Wizards could stand pat if Pierce decides to return to D.C. next season rather than opt out of his deal, but many around the league believe Pierce will do just that and finish his career back home in Los Angeles with the Clippers. Either way, the Wizards need a long-term solution at power forward to go with their electric backcourt of Wall and Beal and the emerging Porter, who was a terrific 3-and-D man during the playoffs and looks ready to claim the small forward spot full time.”
Pierce, the longtime Boston Celtic, played last season with the Washington Wizards after a lot of drama with the Brooklyn Nets previously. Many experts believe Pierce would have signed with the Clippers last summer due to his relationship with head coach/GM Doc Rivers.
Rivers and Pierce spent 9 years together in Boston, achieving great success. They won the 2008 NBA Championship against Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers, and made a return trip to the Finals in 2010 before losing to the Lakers in 7.
It is not surprising that Pierce has interest in joining the Clippers due to his strong ties with several of the players, including Glen Davis from his Boston days.
Pierce can opt out of his deal and will become a free agent on July 1st, and as always we will keep you updated with any developing news!
