Kyle Hendricks tossed a complete game five-hit shutout and completely shut down the San Diego Padres’ offense, leading the Chicago Cubs to a 3-0 victory Thursday night at Petco Park.
The Cubs got out to an early lead on the Padres exactly two batters into the game, and never looked back; after Dexter Fowler walked to lead off the game against Odrisamer Despaigne, Kris Bryant hit a two-run shot to dead center field.
That was all the Cubs would need, though for good measure, they tacked on another run in the seventh inning, when Addison Russell hit a solo home run off Dale Thayer to make the game 3-0.
That was more than enough for Hendricks, who outdueled Despaigne for a complete game victory on just 107 pitches. Hendricks allowed just five hits – and no walks – while striking out seven Padres in nine innings of shutout work.
Despaigne was no slouch, allowing two runs in six innings on just six hits, but it was more than enough for the Cubs to win the game and leave San Diego on a winning note.
The Padres travel to Los Angeles now to take on the Dodgers in a weekend series, while the Cubs move on to Arizona to face the Diamondbacks over the weekend.
