Chris Coghlan Belts 2, Not Enough; Padres Win 4-3

Chris Coghlan hit 2 home runs but it wasn’t enough to beat the San Diego Padres as the Chicago Cubs fell 4-3. The Padres won the first of the three game series tonight.
James Shields got the start for the Padres tonight. He pitched 7 innings allowing 6 hits and 2 runs. He struck out 11 and walked 1. He picked up a no decision for his efforts.
On the other side Jason Hammel got the start. He pitched 7 innings allowing 3 hits and 2 run, but neither of them were earned runs. The Cubs surrendered 3 errors tonight. He stuck out 8 in his outing and was awarded a no decision.
The offense started in the 3rd inning with a pair of home runs. Coughlan hit a solo shot his 5th of the season. Dexter Fowler followed with a solo shot of his own, his 4th of the year and the Cubs held a 2-0 lead.
The Padres got on the board in the 5th inning when Yangervis Solarte hit a RBI single to right. His hit brought in Justin Upton and cut the lead to 2-1.
Will Venable added a RBI single in the 7th inning. His hit brought in Solarte to tie the game at 2-2.
In the 8th inning Derek Norris delivered the hit of the game. His 2-run double brought in Clint Barmes and Cory Spangenberg and gave the Padres a 4-2 advantage.
Coughlin hit his 6th home run of the year in the 9th inning off of Craig Kimbrel to cut the score to 4-3. Joaquin recorded the win for the Padres while James Russel got the lose for the Cubs.
Kimbrel picked up his 11th save of the year. The Padres and Cubs will continue their series tomorrow night at 7:10 p.m. PST
