RECAP: Angels 2, Rockies 1 (11)

Mike Trout made two amazing defensive plays to save the game for the Los Angeles Angels in both the tenth and eleventh innings, and an Albert Pujols sacrifice fly was the walk off winner, as the Halos outlasted the Colorado Rockies 2-1 in extra innings Wednesday night.

The Angels knocked out Rockies starter Jordan Lyles after the bottom of the first inning, when an Albert Pujols line drive off his pitching hand forced the Rockies to go to their bullpen early.

However, reliever Christian Bergman held the Angels in check, allowing just one run in 5.1 innings to get into the seventh inning on a day where the Angels could’ve blown out the struggling Rox bullpen.

Instead, Bergman’s dominance kept the game tied at 1-1, a score that would last nearly all the way through.

The Rockies got on the board first off Halos starter Hector Santiago, when Drew Stubbs singled to score Wilin Rosario in the fourth inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Angels finally got that run back, when Erick Aybar singled off Rockies reliever Scott Oberg to bring home Mike Trout and tie the game, despite the Angels only getting four hits up until that point.

In the top of the tenth inning, Trout robbed Troy Tulowitzki of what would have been a solo home run, and extended the tie for the Angels to come up in the bottom half of the inning.

The Angels couldn’t score in the bottom half, though, and the game moved into the eleventh inning still tied at one run apiece.

In the top of the eleventh, Trout once again came through big, this time gunning down Carlos Gonzalez at the plate, who was tagging from third on a sacrifice fly and would’ve been the go-ahead run.

In the bottom of the eleventh, consecutive singles by C.J. Cron and Kole Calhoun, and an intentional walk to Trout, put the bases loaded with no outs for Pujols, who hit a sacrifice fly to score a run and win the game in walk-off fashion for the Halos.

Santiago threw a gem for the Angels, going six innings and allowing the run on seven hits, with no walks and eight strikeouts. Relievers Mike Morin, Joe Smith, and Huston Street all threw scoreless innings behind Santiago to keep the game tied.

The Angels will now travel to Baltimore to play a three-game series against the Orioles, before heading on to Toronto and Boston on an important ten-game road trip.
