Free Swinging Mariners Clobber Padres 11-4

The San Diego Padres went to Seattle looking for a couple wins in a quick two game set against the Mariners before they come home for a tough home stand against the Washington Nationals and Chicago Cubs later this week. Unfortunately they’ll have to settle for a series split at best as the Mariners clobbered the Padres pitching staff for 6 home runs and an 11-4 win.

Kennedy gave up 4 runs in the first inning. Robinson Cano singled in Brad Miller for the first run of the game, and Nelson Cruz drew a walk against Kennedy who understandably pitched cautiously to the red-hot Cruz. Kyle Seager came up to bat next and absolutely clobbered a home run to right field. Kennedy rebounded by striking out the next two batters.

Mariners starter James Paxton then had his own struggles in the top of the 2nd, walking the bases loaded with 2 outs. Clint Barmes battled to a full count but popped up harmlessly to end and the scored remained 4-0.

Logan Morrison hit a solo home run to right center in the third and after 3 innings the Mariners led 5-0.

In the top of the 4th Jedd Gyorko and Will Middlebrooks both singled with 2 outs and Corey Spangenberg drew a walk to load the bases again for Clint Barmes. Barmes again couldn’t bring in the runs as he struck out. The Mariners also loaded the bases in the 4th and looked likely to add to their big lead with Cano and Cruz due up in the order with only 1 out. Kennedy showed some big league composure however, and struck them both out to get out of the inning.

Kennedy was only able to last 4.2 innings, giving up 5 earned runs and striking out 5. Shawn Kelley relieved Kennedy in the 5th, and in the 6th Kelley’s early season struggles continued struggle as he gave up a home run to the Mariners young catcher Mike Zunino to make it 6-0.

For the Mariners, James Paxton put in a quality start and was relieved by Danny Farquhar to start the 7th inning. The Padres got to Farquhar and loaded the bases for Matt Kemp who hit a grounder to the shortstop Chris Taylor but he bobbled the ball allowing everyone to advance and the Padres got on the board. Yangervis Solarte later blooped a single right up the middle to score two. Down 7-3 with a man on first and third Jedd Gyorko nearly pulled San Diego to within a run, but his blast to left field went just foul and a few pitches later he struck out to end the Padres scoring threat.

In the bottom of the 7th Zunino hit his 2nd home run of the game, this one off of Frank Garces. All the Mariners teed off on Garces, as they hit several deep fly balls off him. Justin Ruggiano and Nelson Cruz were able to add to the home run tally. Cruz’s home run was his MLB leading 15th homer of the season and gave the Mariners an 11-3 lead.

The Padres tried to rally in the 9th as Abraham Almonte drew his 3rd walk of the game and scored from first on a Derek Norris double to left center but they wouldn’t get closer than 11-4.

The loss brings San Diego back down to .500 at 17-17. They’ll look to rebound and split the series tomorrow night with James Shields on the mound for the Padres and the struggling youngster Taijuan Walker starting for the Mariners.

NOTES

Wil Myers was scratched from the game due to a sore wrist, for now Myers is day-to-day.

-The 6 home runs the Mariners hit against the Padres means the Padres have given up 50 for the season, tied for most given up in the majors this season
