2014 MLS Cup Champions LA Galaxy Honored by President Obama
- Updated: February 6, 2015
On February 2, 2015, the Los Angeles Galaxy traveled to Washington, D.C. to be honored by President Barack Obama for a third time during his presidency—the first two times in 2012 and 2013—for their win of the 2014 Major League Soccer Cup. It marks the second time that both the Los Angeles Galaxy and the Los Angeles Kings won their respective championships in the same year (previously in 2012).
During the live-streamed press conference in the White House briefing room, President Obama dedicated time out of his busy schedule to visit with both teams and talk about their achievements. Unfortunately, recently retired Los Angeles Galaxy and former United States Men’s National Team player Landon Donovan could not attend, but Obama noted him in his speech for good measure.
All in good fun, Obama quickly pointed out his disappointment that neither teams called Chicago home and the oddity that the Kings beat the Chicago Blackhawks because of Los Angeles’s lack of ice and much warmer temperatures. To him, I’m sure it seemed a shoo-in for his home team to win. He also compared it to the annual tradition of Groundhog Day, ironically on the same day. For Los Angeles fans, let’s hope he did not predict the outcomes of the 2015 MLS and NHL seasons!
Notably, the President recognized Los Angeles Galaxy player Robbie Rogers. In 2013, Rogers publicly announced his homosexuality and became one of the first openly gay athletes in the United States. He started “blazing a trail” for athletes in the LGBTQ community.
Obama said a few words about Rogers, “Robbie, you’ve also inspired a whole lot of folks here and around the world and we’re very proud of you.”
Persistent in his jokes, Obama ended his speech with, “Best of luck when you are not playing Chicago.”
