The Los Angeles Angels enjoyed a come-from-behind victory with two timely runs in the seventh inning Wednesday afternoon, defeating the Cleveland Indians 4-3 in Cactus League action.
The Angels jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Kyle Kubitza drove in Johnny Giavotella with a single to right field off Indians starter Josh Tomlin.
Then, in the bottom of the third, outfielder Matt Joyce hit a solo home run off Tomlin to make the game 2-0 in favor of the Angels.
In the top of the fourth, though, the wheels came off for Angels pitcher Nick Tropeano thanks to poor defense and timely hitting by the Indians. David Murphy led off with an infield single, and an error by first basemen Efren Navarro on a Lonnie Chisenhall ground ball put two men on with nobody out.
Tropeano then walked Ryan Raburn on four pitches to load the bases, and Ryan Rohlinger after that to bring in a run on the walk. After a Brett Hayes sacrifice fly and an RBI single by Destin Hood, the Indians jumped back to a 3-2 lead at the end of the half inning.
With the error, Tropeano finished his start in four innings of work, allowing three runs (just one earned) on two hits and three walks, with two strikeouts.
Atahualpa Severino, Joe Smith and Mike Morin worked scoreless innings of relief after Tropeano to keep the deficit at 3-2.
The score held until the bottom of the seventh, when the Angels tied up the game on a Daniel Robertson double that scored Grant Green, making it 3-3. Robertson would then come around to score on a sacrifice fly by C.J. Cron, giving the Angels a 4-3 lead after seven full innings.
Armed with the lead, reliever Vinnie Pestano tossed a scoreless top of the eighth for the Angels.
In the ninth inning, Fernando Salas allowed a leadoff double to Bradley Zimmer, and after a pop-out, walked Anthony Gallas to give the Indians runners on first and second with just one out. Fortunately, though, Salas induced a double play ground ball to end the game and preserve the 4-3 victory.
The Angels knocked out twelve hits, and enjoyed a 2-for-2 day from Joyce, and a 2-for-4 day from Giavotella. Cron also went 2-for-3 and Navarro went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks on the afternoon.
The Angels next play the Chicago Cubs on Thursday afternoon at 4:05 pm PDT, before returning to their Cactus League home to host the Arizona Diamondbacks, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Cincinnati Reds on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday respectively.
