The road nightmare finally ended. After enduring 11 straight road games without a win, on Thursday the Los Angeles Kings squeezed a victory by a narrow margin. They defeated the Anaheim Ducks, 2-1, in front of a crowd of 16,008 at Honda Center. Jonathan Quick deserves most of the credit. He came up huge in LA’s crease. Quick stopped 36-of-37 Anaheim shots.

Quick on fire.

Matt Luff and Jeff Carter scored LA’s goals. Carter’s came about one second into a 5-on-3 power play. Derek Grant notched Anaheim’s goal. In Go Kings And Ducks?, I called the last meeting between the two Southern California clubs a “boring lackluster affair.” Well, Thursday’s edition turned out to be even less exciting. Except, at least this time fans got treated to watching a fight. A pretty good heavyweight scrap between Kurtis “WWE” MacDermid and Nicolas Deslauriers. I score the bout 10-9 in favor of the giant WWE guy. MacDermid’s long reach serves as a huge advantage in hockey fights. Plus, his opponents must climb a ladder to reach the dude’s face. Both fighters in Thursday’s bout came up through the Kings’ minor league system. Deslauriers played for the Manchester Monarchs. MacDermid played for the Ontario Reign. How about that?

Two cellar dwellers.

With the loss, the Ducks fell into a tie with the Chicago Blackhawks for the second-worst record in the Western Conference. The Kings own the worst record. Anaheim’s winning percentage stands at only .469, while LA sits at .424. As such, the games between the two clubs virtually lack meaning. I treat them as preseason contests. Just show me a fight or two to make me happy. Thursday, the teams provided that entertainment. The season series now stands tied at two points apiece. The teams meet each other next time in February. For the Ducks, the first bit of good news arrived in the return of Josh Manson finally to the lineup. The second is that the young guns in their lineup are receiving valuable ice time. That experience should help them develop. The Ducks next host the New York Rangers on Saturday. Until then, Let’s Go Ducks !!
