The Padres were looking to take 3 of 4 from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Mother’s Day.

A special day around Major League Baseball, it also had a lot of meaning for Padres pitcher Andrew Cashner, his mother Jane Cashner has been battling Leukemia for the past couple of months and things were not looking good for her. Jane pulled through with the help of her loving family and great doctors in Texas.

He would be opposed by Daniel Hudson, Hudson was making his first start since back-to-back Tommy John surgeries that derailed his last couple of seasons.

Aaron Hill got things started for Arizona hitting a solo homer in the 2nd inning in to the left field seats.

AJ Pollock would add another solo shot in 3rd that just escaped the outreached glove of Justin Upton.

With his appearance cut short due to a pre-determined pitch count Hudson exited after 3.1 innings allowing 2 hits and striking out 5.

San Diego got on the scoreboard in the 6th inning when Jedd Gyorko doubled home Will Venable to cut the lead in half. The Padres ultimately loaded the bases bringing up Cashner with an opportunity to help out his own cause. A hot smash to shortstop Nick Ahmed ended the inning and rally.

Cashner pitched 7 innings giving up 2 runs on 4 hits and striking out 6, which would register as his best start of the season thus far.

Justin Upton got things started in the 8th with a single, Will Venable reached on a force out, Gyorko followed that up with a single. Alexi Amarista stepped up to the plate with the chance to tie the game but grounded into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.

Addison Reed closed things out in the 9th for his second save on the season.

J.C. Ramirez got the win in relief for Arizona to improve to 1-0. Cashner was hung with the bad luck loss dropping his record to 1-6.

The Padres are back in action Tuesday when they travel to the Pacific Northwest to take on the Seattle Mariners in the rivalry known as the Vedder Cup.
