According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, Josh Hamilton is possibly facing at least a 25 game suspension following the news that he relapsed after cocaine and alcohol abuse and has violated the MLB drug policy.
It is still unclear how long the former MVP will be suspended. The officials are still deciding how long is appropriate; it looks as though it will be at least 25 games but less than a full season.
If the MLB are to follow their drug policy the suspension should be in the realm of at least 15 games but no more than 25.
Although, Hamilton is not expected to be ready for the regular season because he is recovering from an offseason shoulder surgery. As reported by SI.com, “the Angels owe him more than $90 million during the next three seasons as part of the five-year, $125 million deal he signed before the 2013 season. He is scheduled to be paid $25 million in 2015 and $32.4 million in both 2016 and ’17.”
Manager, Mike Scosia and some of his former teammates spoke to the media yesterday regarding the news of his relapse. ESPN.com reports:
“We’re all waiting for some information to come out of New York,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Thursday. “He obviously went up there for a meeting, and we’ll see how everything unfolds. But right now, we’re just in a holding pattern like everyone else.”
“It’s just sad news,” former teammate Michael Young told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “I think about a friend and a former teammate, and a guy with a family. I empathize. It just has to be a very tough situation for Josh right now.
“Hopefully, he has a lot of good people around who are helping him through a tough time. But I hope he also knows that there are people that he’s played with that care about him, that care about his future and are willing to help in any way they can.”
General manager Jon Daniels said: “Forget baseball. My first thought was that I hope for the best for him as a person.”
We are hoping for nothing but the best for Josh Hamilton as he goes through this rough period in his life. We will report more as the news comes.
